National Cake Decorating Day: Our Bakery Members’ Favorite Designs

Long wedding cake from Lindsay's Little Bakery

National Cake Decorating Day is the perfect excuse to celebrate one of the sweetest (and most beautiful) parts of any wedding: the cake. From towering tiers of buttercream to delicate sugar flowers and modern minimalist designs, wedding cakes have long been a centerpiece of the celebration—equal parts dessert, art, and symbol of love.

To honor the day and spotlight this oh-so-important wedding feature, we asked a few of our talented bakery members to share their favorite cake they’ve ever decorated—and the story behind it.

Let’s just say, these cakes take “icing on the cake” to a whole new level.

The Little Things Bakery

From Leah, The Little Things Bakery:

As a longtime fan of Harry Potter, creating this cake was a wonderful opportunity to immerse myself in the magical world I love, bringing elements of the series to life through every detail. Even the photo shoot was a delight, as I styled it with some of my own cherished Harry Potter books and treasures, adding a personal touch of enchantment to the entire experience.

Cakes by Heather Ashley

From Heather, Cakes by Heather Ashley:

My favorite cake is usually the most recent one I've done. I'm always trying to push myself creatively and I like to come up with a design that is unique to the couple and will bring that "wow" factor to their wedding. Right now I'm loving this hanging chandelier cake I just did. Thousands of delicate pieces were strung together and hung on a suspended cake to bring a bit of that "magic" that the bride requested.

Lindsay’s Little Bakery

From Lindsay, Lindsay’s Little Bakery:

The ultimate fall wedding cake: Designed to perfectly match the bridesmaids’ dresses and capture the rustic ranch-style venue for this October wedding. I love adding abstract palette knife elements to my cakes, and this color palette—various shades of burnt orange—was such a fun one to create and play with. It was also the first time I incorporated silk flowers instead of my usual fresh florals, which added a new layer of texture and movement.

All the rage right now: Elongated cakes have completely stolen my heart! If I had to choose just one, this Italian-feast-inspired design—with vibrant local blooms, raw edge details, swooping buttercream, and tiny grape clusters—would be it. Elongated “centerpiece” cakes are such a unique, perfectly blank canvas for creating floral and buttercream masterpieces, and seeing the sunlight hit this one just as it was setting was pure magic.
