Just off Santa Barbara’s lively State Street, the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara offers more than a picturesque setting—it carries a sense of community and history that makes it unlike any other venue in town. With its Spanish-style architecture, vine-draped walls, and peaceful courtyard, it feels like a sanctuary tucked into the city. Couples are drawn not only to its flexible spaces—whether saying “I do” beneath the trees, gathering in the gardens, or celebrating in the airy sanctuary—but also to the welcoming spirit of the place itself.
To give us an insider’s perspective, we reached out to Joanie Bear of the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara. She shares what couples love most about the venue, the details that make it shine, and her best advice for creating a meaningful wedding experience here.
What is your favorite location to work? What is the style that makes this location special for couples?
I would start with our stunning sanctuary—it’s truly the heart of USSB and the perfect setting for a romantic, meaningful ceremony. For receptions, my favorite spot is the Parish Courtyard, if the weather allows. There’s nothing like dining under the open sky surrounded by our beautiful garden ambiance.
Then, when it’s time to turn up the energy, moving into the Parish Hall for dancing and late-night fun is seamless. With string lights glowing both indoors and outdoors, the two spaces connect beautifully, creating the feeling of one expansive, indoor–outdoor celebration. It’s the best of both worlds: fresh-air elegance for dining and a lively, comfortable space for partying into the night. I also advise couples to take advantage of Alice Keck Park, located just across the street, for stunning photographs while their guests enjoy a relaxed and happy cocktail hour.
What is your #1 top piece of advice you give to couples before they hire you?
I recommend couples use our Preferred Vendor List for the most successful wedding at USSB. Over the years, I’ve carefully curated this list with professionals who not only understand our space but who have consistently delivered exceptional experiences. Most importantly, this includes choosing a capable wedding planner, caterer, DJ, florist, and more. These vendors are tried-and-true, familiar with the flow of our venue, and proven to work seamlessly together. Couples often fall in love with our space right away—but to truly make their wedding everything it can be, I encourage them to take advantage of the groundwork I’ve done in vetting vendors who know USSB inside and out and treat every couple with consistency, care, and excellence.
What is trending with your couples?
Many of our couples are leaning into experiential weddings. Instead of sticking to rigid traditions, they’re incorporating interactive elements—think signature cocktails, live music, creative photo moments, and cozy lounge areas. I’m also seeing a trend toward sustainability, with couples appreciating venues like USSB that value reusability, natural beauty, and minimal waste. And one of the most exciting shifts has been the rise of micro-weddings! Intimacy truly shines when couples celebrate with a smaller guest list, focusing on meaningful connections and unforgettable details. At USSB, we’ve embraced this trend wholeheartedly—I love working with couples to design intimate, memorable weddings that feel both personal and extraordinary.
What are 2 things you wish couples would do for every wedding?
First, I wish every couple would build in a quiet moment together right after the ceremony. At USSB, I love watching couples sneak away for just a few breaths before the party begins—it sets the tone for the whole day.
Second, I’d love couples to trust their vendors more! We’ve built a wonderful network of Santa Barbara professionals who know our space like the back of their hand. When couples let go of micromanaging and let the experts shine, everything flows beautifully.
To date, what wedding have you done that has made the top of your favorite list, and why?
That’s a tough one, but one wedding that stands out was Jacquelyn and Ivan’s May celebration at USSB. The ceremony and reception flowed seamlessly, with décor that beautifully highlighted both the sanctuary and courtyard. Their planner, Tricia Maldonado, created a warm, inviting atmosphere that felt deeply personal and reflective of the couple. What made it especially memorable were the unique touches Jacquelyn and Ivan added—a show-stopping vintage car that turned heads and lush tropical elements that brought a vibrant, joyful energy to the day. The couple was radiant, the guests were fully engaged, and the venue truly came alive. Those are the kinds of weddings that remind me exactly why I love what I do.
