What You Need to Know About Wedding Gown Alterations – Featuring Ablitt’s Fine Cleaners
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about our Santa Barbara community, it’s that reputation and relationships mean everything. That’s why Ablitt’s Fine Cleaners is always at the top of my list when it comes to gown alterations or attire care — they’ve earned that trust time and time again.
For over 100 years, the Ablitt’s family has cared for garments with unmatched attention and integrity. Their roots in the dry cleaning industry run deep here, and for generations, they’ve been the name locals turn to when it comes to clothing that carries meaning — from heirloom pieces to once-in-a-lifetime gowns. I’ve always admired how Ablitt’s blends old-world craftsmanship with modern service, and during wedding season, that care shines brightest through their expert alteration work.
If you’re a bride (or working with one), here’s what you need to know about why Ablitt’s is the go-to for wedding gown and special occasion alterations.
Alterations Are More Than Just Taking in the Waist
There’s a common misconception that dress alterations are simple. But when you’re resizing a gown — especially from a larger size down — it’s not just about adjusting the waistline. It’s a full re-engineering process that may involve:
Re-shaping the bodice
Adjusting sleeves and straps
Reworking hems and lengths
Preserving design details like lace, beading, and appliqué
Ablitt’s has an experienced team of in-house seamstresses who specialize in delicate fabrics and couture construction, making them ideal for everything from modern designer gowns to vintage pieces passed down through generations.
When to Book: Give Yourself Six Weeks
For bridal gowns, Ablitt’s recommends booking your alterations at least six weeks in advance. They’re currently in high demand—and for good reason. Bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride, and menswear alterations typically have a two-week turnaround, but bridal gowns require more time and multiple fittings.
Tip: Bring the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear on your wedding day to your first fitting for best results.
