The Best Destination Wedding Venues in Santa Barbara: From the Coast to the Santa Ynez Valley

ZOHE'S TAKE

I've been in the Santa Barbara wedding scene for 25 years — and the question I get most from out-of-town couples is always some version of: "Why Santa Barbara?" My answer is always the same: because nowhere else gives you Mediterranean weather, dramatic mountain-meets-ocean landscapes, world-class food and wine, and a downtown you can actually walk around in — all in one place. And what most couples don't realize is that "Santa Barbara" isn't just the city. It's the whole corridor — from the beachfront resorts along the coast to the rustic barns and vineyard estates of the Santa Ynez Valley, just 45 minutes north. I've attended events, opened venues, and watched this community grow for decades. These are the venues I'd send my own family to.

Tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara has quietly become one of the most sought-after destination wedding locations in the country — and for good reason.

The Mediterranean climate means you can plan an outdoor ceremony in January and not lose sleep over it. The landscapes shift from oceanfront bluffs to vineyard hills to lush garden estates within a 45-minute drive. And the venue options range from barefoot-casual coastal celebrations to black-tie ballroom affairs — with everything in between.

We've organized this guide into two regions, because choosing between a coastal Santa Barbara wedding and a Santa Ynez Valley wine-country weekend is one of the most delicious decisions you'll make.

PART ONE: SANTA BARBARA CITY & COAST

1. Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort

Best for: Couples who want a full-service oceanfront resort with room for a big guest list

The Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort is exactly what it sounds like — a sprawling coastal resort sitting right on the shores of the Pacific, surrounded by the majestic Santa Barbara mountains on one side and endless ocean views on the other.

What makes it exceptional for destination weddings is the sheer variety of spaces available. The iconic Plaza del Sol delivers 180-degree views of the ocean and the hills of the Santa Barbara Riviera. The Reagan Room features a vaulted ceiling, panoramic coastline views, and an outdoor veranda. And if you're working with a large guest list, the Grand Ballroom and Santa Barbara Ballrooms offer up to 16,000 square feet of customizable indoor space — with enhanced lighting, shimmering chandeliers, full rigging capabilities, and an outdoor patio.

Add exquisite in-house culinary options, state-of-the-art audiovisual capabilities, and luxurious on-site accommodations, and your guests never need to leave the property.

Why it works for destination weddings: Everything is under one roof. Guests check in, celebrate, sleep, and wake up to ocean views. For couples bringing in a large out-of-town crowd, this is the stress-free answer.

2. Belmond El Encanto

Best for: Intimate luxury seekers who want a hideaway that feels truly exclusive

Belmond El Encanto sits in the hills above Santa Barbara — quietly, elegantly, like it's been waiting for exactly the right couple.

Lush gardens, charming historic bungalows, panoramic views of the city and the Pacific, and the kind of service that anticipates your needs before you have them. This is not a big-production venue. It's an intimate, refined hideaway for couples who want their wedding to feel like a carefully kept secret shared with the people they love most.

Why it works for destination weddings: Your guests stay in beautiful bungalows on property. The whole weekend has a luxurious, unhurried feel — like everyone has escaped the world together for a few days. Which is exactly what a destination wedding should feel like.

3. The Canary Hotel

Best for: City-loving couples, downtown enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to walk to dinner the night before

Zohe's note: I watched the Canary be built decades ago, and I'll tell you — you cannot catch a better view of the city from that rooftop. It's one of those spaces that stops you in your tracks every single time. The Kimpton group always does a beautiful job, and the food consistently delivers.

The Canary Hotel is the boutique hotel answer for couples who want their destination wedding to feel like a city experience — vibrant, walkable, and unmistakably Santa Barbara.

Located in the heart of downtown, the Canary's rooftop terrace delivers stunning views of the city skyline and the Santa Ynez Mountains. Guests can walk to State Street restaurants, the waterfront, and the iconic Santa Barbara Courthouse — all within a few blocks. It's chic, it's social, and the rooftop is genuinely one of the best views in the city.

Why it works for destination weddings: Your guests get the full Santa Barbara city experience. No rental cars needed. Everything is walkable. It's the most connected, social version of a destination wedding weekend — and the rooftop at golden hour is worth the trip alone.

4. Elings Park

Best for: Couples who want panoramic views, outdoor freedom, and a blank canvas to make entirely their own

Elings Park is Santa Barbara's best-kept secret for couples who want a blank canvas with an extraordinary backdrop.

Perched on a hill with 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, the city, and the mountains, the park offers vast landscaped grounds that can be styled in virtually any direction — bohemian, garden party, modern minimalist, whatever you can dream. It's a venue that rewards creative couples with a vision and a great design team.

Why it works for destination weddings: The views are dramatic enough that you don't need much else. Bring in great rentals, a killer caterer, and a lighting designer, and you have something truly extraordinary — at a price point that leaves room for the details that make guests rave.

PART TWO: SANTA YNEZ VALLEY & WINE COUNTRY

Just 45 minutes north of Santa Barbara, the Santa Ynez Valley is its own world — rolling vineyard hills, farm-to-table cuisine, rustic elegance, and a slower pace that makes everyone exhale. For couples who want a wine-country wedding weekend, this is where it happens.

5. Sunstone Vineyards & Winery

Best for: Wine lovers, Tuscany dreamers, and anyone who wants to feel like they're in Europe without the flight

If your vision involves rolling vine-covered hills, a Tuscan-inspired stone estate, and wine flowing freely — Sunstone Vineyards & Winery is your venue.

Set in the Santa Ynez Valley, Sunstone has intimate courtyards, sweeping mountain views, and an atmosphere that makes guests feel like they've been transported to the Italian countryside. The wine is exceptional. The light at golden hour is almost unfair. And the photos are consistently among the most stunning we feature on this site.

Why it works for destination weddings: It's a self-contained estate with accommodation options nearby in Los Olivos and Solvang — so your guests get the full wine-country weekend experience. Arrive Friday, wine taste Saturday morning, wedding Saturday evening, brunch Sunday. Perfect.

6. Roblar Farm

Best for: Couples who want a true wine-country estate experience — private, pastoral, and utterly beautiful

Zohe's note: I attended a dinner at Roblar Farm and it was one of those evenings I still think about. We sat at a long family-style table under the Winemaker's Pergola as the sun set pink over the mountains. The chef pulled everything from the on-site garden — and at the end of the night, we got to pick our own produce to take home. Zucchini, radishes, a carrot, lemons. It sounds simple, but it was the most thoughtful, generous gesture. That's the spirit of this place.

Roblar Farm is an 18-acre private estate nestled in the heart of Santa Barbara wine country — and it is something else entirely.

The property includes the striking black Tuxedo Barn (a showstopper of a reception space), the Winemaker's Pergola set within a one-acre organic vegetable garden, a Grand Lawn, a Pool Terrace, sweeping views of the Santa Ynez Mountains, and a renovated luxury farmhouse with infinity pool for overnight guests.

Why it works for destination weddings: It's a full buyout of a private estate. Your wedding party wakes up there, celebrates there, and falls asleep to the sounds of wine country. There is no commute. There is no separation. There is only the farm, the mountains, the wine, and the people you love.

7. Zaca Lake

Best for: Adventure-loving couples and groups who want complete privacy, nature immersion, and a wedding weekend that feels like an unforgettable escape

Zaca Lake is unlike anything else on this list — and that's exactly the point.

A private lake retreat tucked into the mountains north of Santa Barbara, Zaca Lake offers complete, exclusive buyout of the entire property for your group. Renovated historic cabins provide comfortable, upscale accommodations. The team collaborates with you to design the full culinary experience — from a morning continental breakfast and charcuterie grazing table at lunch, to catered dinners that range from farm-to-table creations to outdoor BBQs. Daily itineraries can include hiking, kayaking, swimming, wine tasting, and whatever else your group is into.

This isn't a "show up, get married, leave" kind of venue. It's an experience — a full wedding weekend where your guests are immersed in nature, adventure, and genuine connection.

Why it works for destination weddings: Your guests aren't just attending your wedding. They're living it with you for an entire weekend. Zaca Lake creates the kind of closeness and memory-making that a single-day event simply can't replicate.

8. 1880 Union Hotel

Best for: History lovers, adventurous couples, and anyone who wants a venue that genuinely cannot be replicated anywhere else

Zohe's note: I hosted a vendor event at the 1880 Union Hotel in Los Alamos and the reaction from the room said everything. As guests toured the property, you could hear actual oooohs and ahhhhs from upstairs — the quaint, uncommon decor, the authentic Old West quarters, the nine individually styled guest rooms with all their modern luxuries tucked inside historic bones. It's the kind of space that makes people slow down and look at everything.

The 1880 Union Hotel in Los Alamos is a former stagecoach stop turned iconic landmark — a historic property that offers complete private reign over nine guest rooms, multiple event spaces, and a late-night saloon that stays open until 2 AM. Yes, really.

The decor is historic, authentic, and completely one-of-a-kind — antiques, vintage furnishings, and Old West details that no rental company can replicate. Additional decorations are welcome, but honestly? The place does most of the work.

Why it works for destination weddings: It's a full buyout of a historic landmark with its own saloon. Your guests stay on property, celebrate until 2 AM, wake up in a piece of California history, and gather for brunch before heading home. It's not a venue. It's a whole world.

WHY SANTA BARBARA (AND THE VALLEY) WORKS FOR ANY DESTINATION WEDDING

The range in this guide is intentional.

Because "Santa Barbara" isn't one kind of destination — it's every kind. Oceanfront resorts and hillside hideaways. Historic saloons and organic farms. Boutique rooftop hotels and private lakeside retreats.

The weather is almost always perfect. The food and wine scene is exceptional. The landscapes are dramatic in every direction. And the city — and valley — are beautiful enough that your guests will thank you for bringing them here before the wedding even starts.

Whether you're picturing a lively beachfront celebration, an intimate vineyard dinner, or a full weekend buyout of a private estate, Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley have a venue for it.
